15:00 <popey> #startmeeting DocViewer meeting 15:00 <meetingology> Meeting started Thu Mar 3 15:00:40 2016 UTC. The chair is popey. Information about MeetBot at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/meetingology. 15:00 <meetingology> 15:00 <meetingology> Available commands: action commands idea info link nick 15:00 <popey> how are you! 15:00 <popey> ? 15:01 <JMulholland> o/ 15:01 <sverzegnassi> fine, thanks! 15:01 <popey> Super! 15:01 <popey> Some updates... 15:02 <sverzegnassi> JMulholland: hey! o/ 15:02 <popey> i worked with balloons to finally get your no-cache merge to land, and work on jenkins 15:02 <popey> there was a problem that the caching wasn't being cleaned up between builds on jenkins 15:02 <popey> but now it is, so jenkins always builds in a way that pulls latest libreoffice 15:02 <balloons> AND, it versions properly now too :-)! 15:02 <popey> Oh, and that too! 15:02 <sverzegnassi> I've spotted it yesterday :) 15:03 <popey> We had bzr missing, and now it is back, so we get bzr revno in the click package name which is super news 15:03 <popey> I'm currently testing the app on my devices. No problem so far. 15:03 <sverzegnassi> that's really a great news! 15:03 <sverzegnassi> thanks balloons! 15:03 <popey> If I don't see any major issues, then I'll upload in the morning tomorrow. If you're okay with that 15:04 <sverzegnassi> So, we'll have an update with LO 5.0.5, the bottom-edge fix and the fix for the M10. It's okay for me! 15:04 <popey> Ya. Great! 15:04 <popey> I'm also working on the automated doc testing, but that's not done yet. 15:04 <sverzegnassi> I could then fix theming (silo-50 issues) without having to do it twice 15:05 <popey> Been manually testing for now. 15:05 <sverzegnassi> do you need some further document? :D 15:05 <popey> if you have some to share, sure :) 15:06 <sverzegnassi> I actually have more than 10 documents I use for testing. I'd need to check the copyright first (some of them are books I use for university) 15:07 <popey> Okay, yeah, I'm being careful about which examples I use. 15:07 <popey> Will use some copyrighted things for sure, but won't share those. 15:07 <sverzegnassi> ok! 15:07 <popey> Ok, that's the end of my updates :) 15:08 <sverzegnassi> haha... now it's my turn! 15:08 <balloons> perhaps using some public domain books would help? 15:09 <sverzegnassi> yup... I should have some CC-licensed statistics book on my PC, need to check! 15:10 <sverzegnassi> I did some progress with the PDF plugin btw. I know popey, you were complaining about its slowness. I had a look, and if I disable the tiled rendering, it performs very well (maybe still a bit slower, but it's fair) 15:11 <popey> Good! Any improvement you can make would be most welcome 15:11 <popey> It's only certain types of documents that seem to be slow though. 15:11 <popey> Not sure of the pattern. 15:12 <balloons> depending on how the pdf is encoded, they can get nuts on a limited device 15:12 <popey> yeah 15:12 <sverzegnassi> also, images and graphical resources are part of the problem... 15:12 <popey> well, interestingly the Linux Voice (image heavy) ones seem really quick to render 15:13 <popey> But yes, I don't know how they're encoded 15:13 <popey> might just be optimised well by the thing that generated them 15:13 <popey> (might be interesting to look at the metadata of PDFs) 15:14 <sverzegnassi> i would say that it depends also on the page you're viewing. Some Linux Voice's page is very slow to be rendered... 15:14 <popey> ah okay 15:14 <sverzegnassi> But I think there's not much to do with this... we don't have many options for tweaking things a bit... 15:16 <sverzegnassi> Probably, just thinking loudly, switching to an engine like Foxit could help - afaik Pdfium - the Chromium PDF engine - is based on it, and it's open source 15:16 <popey> Yeah, I can't imagine we can ever make it super fast 15:18 <sverzegnassi> Other update, I'm updating the UI of the app, using the new UITK components + some of the UX specs for clock-app and calendar-app 15:18 <sverzegnassi> https://imgur.com/a/KqczD 15:18 <sverzegnassi> (I don't like all that monochrome to be honest) 15:19 <popey> oooh! 15:20 <sverzegnassi> (huh, in the second screenshot - i.e. selection mode - the "textual button with icon" does not come from the specs) 15:22 <popey> Looks good! 😃 15:25 <sverzegnassi> anyway, I hope to deprecate that document browser soon :P 15:25 <popey> heh, with the one that has previews? 15:26 <sverzegnassi> yeah, but i'm not only about the thumbnails... https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-docviewer-app/+bug/1540350 15:26 <sverzegnassi> you know, the recents page + file manager concept 15:26 <popey> oh nice :) yeah 15:26 <popey> That'll be awesome. 15:27 <sverzegnassi> but, as we were discussing, we can't do that because of the potential security issues (we provide libreoffice and have full FS access is not fair) and content-hub is not ready yet :/ 15:27 <popey> yeah 15:28 <sverzegnassi> but being able to do it with just a few places (Documents, Downloads and SD card) would be already great, IMHO 15:28 <popey> yeah 15:28 <JMulholland> indeed 15:30 <sverzegnassi> JMulholland: what do you think about it? I mean, what could I use as reference for prototyping it? 15:30 <sverzegnassi> (i.e. which apps or mock-up or...) 15:31 <JMulholland> I dont think we have anything quite like that at the moment I’m afraid 15:31 <JMulholland> but I’ll talk to the other designers incase there are apps/patterns Im overlooking here 15:33 <sverzegnassi> mmh... okay. I have some component ready since months, so I'll probably start playing with it in the next weeks. 15:34 <JMulholland> cool, let me know if you need any UX input/help (particularly as this may be something new) 15:34 <sverzegnassi> sure! 15:35 <sverzegnassi> huh, by the way, http://imgur.com/cJMXjpB 15:35 <sverzegnassi> JMulholland: I saw that the purple accent color has been removed from clock-app 15:36 <sverzegnassi> what's the position of the latest UX specs on this? 15:36 <sverzegnassi> I mean, should we keep all text grey inside a ListItem? 15:36 <JMulholland> yea, the purple was one of the things dropped in the recent visual overhaul 15:37 <JMulholland> I believe so, but am pestering one of the visual designers to clarify as we speak 15:39 <sverzegnassi> ok! I'm a bit unsure because clock-app has anyway some color - e.g. blue or red. All grey is a bit sad... :D 15:39 <popey> yeah, very little colour in the clock now, just blue at the top, and colour on buttons on the stopwatch 15:40 <JMulholland> there’s very little colour in the visual style over-all now, in the march toward a more ‘clean’ look. Bold colours tend to be reserved for things that really need to jump out 15:44 <sverzegnassi> ok, looking forward for further info in future. I really like the new style for dekko and calendar-app (and the new today scope) 15:45 <JMulholland> cool, we can help with styling DV in a smilar fashion, and it should only get easier as the SDK is updated 15:47 <sverzegnassi> yeah, as we complete the migration to all the new goodies from ota10, it will be a lot easier 15:48 <popey> +1 15:48 <popey> Super. 15:48 <popey> Ok, anything else to discuss? 15:49 <sverzegnassi> nothing from me 15:50 <JMulholland> me either 15:50 <popey> Awesome. Thanks guys! 15:50 <sverzegnassi> thank you, popey, JMulholland! 15:51 <popey> #endmeeting
