I'm project lead behind Avaneya, a cerebral science fiction game for Ubuntu. I'm based just out of Vancouver. 23:10 <BobJonkman> I'm from Elmira, but I've travelled to the Greater Metropolis of Guelph for the occasion 23:10 <BobJonkman> Hi KombuchaKip! Good to see you again 23:10 <Freshmeadiow> I am Jim Kelsh (Freshmeadow) a professional accountant (CGA) and a Linux user since 2006. 23:11 <BobJonkman> For those interested in reading along, there's an agenda at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/CanadianTeam/Meetings/Next 23:11 <BobJonkman> Hi Freshmeadiow! 23:11 <jamesmcveity> Hi Bob. 23:12 * KombuchaKip waves 23:14 <azend|away> Hi 23:16 <azend|away> ubuntulog: 23:17 <azend|away> meetingology: 23:17 <Freshmeadiow> Testing the connection 23:19 <azend|away> Freshmeadiow: Hi! 23:19 <azend|away> It's just Bob now who is away 23:20 <azend|away> He should be here... 23:20 <azend|away> He's sitting next to me 23:20 <azend|away> Alright, who's ready for some Ubuntu! 23:21 <BobJonkmanToo> Seems the network has split. 23:22 <BobJonkmanToo> I can't see my original instance on my IRC client, but I seem to be OK on the Webchat 23:23 <BobJonkmanToo> So, I was passing greetings to Freshmeadiow , jamesmcveity, KombuchaKip , azend or azend|away 23:23 <BobJonkmanToo> There's an agenda at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/CanadianTeam/Meetings/Next 23:24 <BobJonkmanToo> It's kinda sparse, so I'm open to suggestions for topics 23:25 <azend|away> You're right, it is somewhat sparse 23:25 <BobJonkman2> The big thing is a recap of Ubuntu Hours 23:25 <BobJonkman2> #topic Ubuntu Hours 23:25 <azend|away> #chair BobJonkman2 23:27 <BobJonkman2> #topic UbuntuHours 23:29 <BobJonkman2> So the big news is that we're at a new Ubuntu Hour in Guelph! 23:29 <azend|away> I understand Ubuntu Hours are supposed to happen every one or two weeks? 23:30 <Freshmeadiow> As a Guelphite, YAY!!!! 23:30 <BobJonkman2> From the feedback I've had, there's a demand for more Linuxy activities in Guelph 23:30 <BobJonkman2> We've been running them monthly in Kitchener and Waterloo, 23:31 <BobJonkman2> but other places have them weekly 23:36 <BobJonkman2> The nice thing about Ubuntu Hours is that there's no rules 23:36 <BobJonkman2> (aside from the Code of Conduct, of course) 23:36 <azend|away> How's the community response been to those events? 23:36 <BobJonkman2> So you can have them as often or infrequently as you want 23:37 <Freshmeadow> Hands up who enjoys the Unity desktop. My hand is up, and I use it in my business. 23:37 <BobJonkman2> The Ubuntu Hour Kitchener is really well attended, but Ubuntu Hour Waterloo has been kinda sparse. 23:37 <BobJonkman2> Which is why we're in Guelph today (this would normally be the Ubuntu Hour Waterloo day) 23:37 <BobJonkman2> Freshmeadow: Not a fan of Unity.. 23:38 <Freshmeadow> Why is that, Bob? 23:38 <BobJonkman2> $$ Thread marker for Unity 23:38 <BobJonkman2> $$ On my laptop I've replace Unity with Mate 23:39 <txwikinger> hi .. finally got connected :-) 23:39 <BobJonkman2> $$ I've also used LXDE, which isn't bad 23:39 <BobJonkman2> %% Thread marker for Ubuntu Hours 23:39 <BobJonkman2> %% I've also run one-off Ubuntu Hours. 23:39 <BobJonkman2> %% Mostly in Toronto, where I don't get to very often 23:40 <azend|away> !! I would like to have some events in Guelph 23:40 <lubotu1> azend|away: I am only a bot, please don't think I'm intelligent :) 23:40 <BobJonkman2> %% I'm hoping genii-around will run one (hint hint) 23:40 <azend|away> !! I would be happy to run an Ubuntu Hour every once and a while here 23:40 <lubotu1> azend|away: I am only a bot, please don't think I'm intelligent :) 23:40 <Freshmeadow> $$ I like in Unity how it focuses the app you are in as full screen. For me it minimizes distractions, especially if I am in a spreadsheet. 23:40 <BobJonkman2> ^^ Thread marker for Thread Markers 23:40 <azend|away> !! Perhaps bi-weekly as the Ubuntu Hour community promote 23:40 <lubotu1> azend|away: I am only a bot, please don't think I'm intelligent :) 23:41 <BobJonkman2> ^^ Gotta be careful not to use bot prefixes like ! or # 23:42 <BobJonkman2> %% It's getting crowded in here. 23:42 <azend|away> BobJonkman2: unless you like annoying bots 23:43 <BobJonkman2> %% Got 7 people here IRL! 23:43 <jamesmcveity> I like Unity. I was sure if I did at first. I played around with most of the other options even win managers. Now I like Unity best of all even over Windows or MacOS 23:44 <BobJonkman2> Hi Katherine_ ! 23:44 <Katherine_> Hi BobJonkman! 23:45 <BobJonkman2> We've been talking about Ubuntu Hours and desktop environments like Unity and LXDE 23:45 <BobJonkman2> The network has been pretty bad, keeps kicking us off 23:46 <Freshmeadow> $$ The network kicks us off beccause you don;t like Unity :) 23:46 <jamesmcveity> Ha 23:47 <azend|away> Am I still online? 23:48 <BobJonkman2> Had to move to another table because of the crowds gathering for Ubuntu Hour Guelph :) 23:49 <BobJonkman2> A good problem to have 23:49 <Freshmeadow> $$ I find with practice Unity becomes very intuitive and very fast. I am running 12.04 32 bit and 64 bit on 2 machines. 23:49 <azend|away> Have we thought of marketing strategies for letting people know about the Ubuntu Hours?? 23:50 <jamesmcveity> Freshmeadow - Are you a Unity dev? 23:51 <Freshmeadow> I wish, I am an accountant who also loves Linux. I guess I shouldn't mention that I like Gnome 3 too... 23:52 <jamesmcveity> Not a fan of that de. 23:53 <jamesmcveity> I do find it fast. 23:53 <BobJonkman2> azend|away was just telling us about the Raspberry Pi. John Kerr (here IRL) is a big fan of the Pi; gave a KWLUG presentation 23:54 <BobJonkman2> I mostly like Gnome3, but it doesn't handle two screens all that well 23:55 <jamesmcveity> KDE was always my main de. Kubuntu was a solid spin. I fell in love with Unity and dumped K 23:55 <Freshmeadow> $$ I find that traditional desktops like in Windows 7, can offer too many distractions in the taskbar when you are deep into a complex spreadsheet. Unity and Gnome say "You are working on this spreadsheet. That is it!!" 23:57 * BobJonkman2 is switching to his other self 23:57 <BobJonkman1> Back 23:58 <BobJonkman1> Freshmeadow: That's exactly what I dislike about Unity - all the indicators I like to see are missing 00:01 <BobJonkman1> So, we're at 8:00pm. 00:02 <BobJonkman1> I'm going to end the meeting, unless there's more business to be transacted 00:03 <jamesmcveity> Okay Bob. Good luck Guelph! 00:03 <BobJonkman1> Thanx jamesmcveity! 00:04 <azend|away> thanks jamesmcveity 00:04 <Katherine_> Have a nice Ubuntu Hour! 00:04 <BobJonkman1> Allrighty then! 00:04 <BobJonkman1> Thanx Katherine! 00:04 <BobJonkman1> We'll stay online for a bit yet. 00:05 <Katherine_> Maybe next time I'll have less trouble and get on closer to 7. 00:05 <Freshmeadow> $$ I think Unity has a different philosophy. It is trying to minimize the distractions. Use what works for you, That is the beauty of Linux and open source. 00:05 <BobJonkman1> I'm going to pressure azend azend__ azend|away to work on the Ubuntu-ca-Guelph wiki page 00:05 <BobJonkman1> And maybe set up a mailing list 00:05 <BobJonkman1> Any last words? 00:06 <BobJonkman1> OK. 00:06 <BobJonkman1> #endmeeting 00:06 <azend|away> Not from me 00:07 <BobJonkman1> Hmm.. Looks like the meeting bot fell asleep 00:07 <azend|away> however we may come up with some stuff in our Ubuntu Hour following htis meeting 00:07 <azend|away> #endmeeting 00:10 <Freshmeadow> Anyone running Kubuntu?? 00:10 <BobJonkman> #endmeeting
