13:02 <popey> I understand DanChapman|afk is afk because he has a personal appointment with his partner
13:03 <popey> how was your vacation jkt ? don't think we've spoken since
13:05 <jkt> excellent, thanks you
13:05 <popey> Great!
13:06 <popey> So I wanted to talk to you about the work the guys have been doing on trojita..
13:06 <jkt> I'll have some more at the end of the month
13:06 <popey> oh nice!
13:06 <popey> Dan uploaded his "playground" ubuntu port of trojita called "dekko" to the online store.
13:07 <popey> It's had some good feedback from users, which is great news.
13:07 <jkt> good to hear about users; is it publicly available somewhere?
13:07 <popey> http://launchpad.net/dekko
13:07 <popey> ^ there
13:07 <jkt> also, why the name change?
13:08 <popey> the different name was because this was intended to be a temporary app to allow him to test stuff quickly without having to land upstream.
13:08 <popey> and didn't want to tarnish the trojita name if it was broken ☻
13:08 <popey> As I understand it ☻
13:09 <popey> because it's not technically pure trojita, and didn't want our users to see it, see the name and then have preconceptions about trojita itself.
13:09 <jkt> hehe, OK
13:09 <popey> I think it was the best way to go about it really.
13:09 <jkt> agreed
13:09 <popey> So it's had some users pounding on it, which is good.
13:09 <jkt> I suppose code isn't in git, but just in bzr, right?
13:09 <popey> I've only seen that in bzr.
13:09 <jkt> I'm asking because I'm on a *very* slow GPRS connection in the middle of nowhere
13:10 <popey> bookmark for later ㋛
13:10 <jkt> done
13:10 <jkt> now, one of the things I noticed is that the influx of patches has stopped, and that nobody but the original author and me comment on them
13:10 <popey> The idea being that Dan (and the guys) could prototype features in dekko then prepare patches for upstream trojita.
13:11 <popey> Yes, I noticed.
13:11 <popey> I think there's a few reasons for that.
13:11 <jkt> even pretty basic functionality like prompting for passwords was broken
13:12 <popey> I know that real life has been getting in the way for the guys.
13:12 <popey> which happens to us all of course.
13:13 <popey> I think Dan has also been finding it hard to take on some of the larger pieces of work.
13:13 <popey> For example some of the Ubuntu specific features would break trojita upstream desktop UI, which is clearly not wanted.
13:14 <jkt> well, the existence of dekko kinda explains the slow work upstream
13:15 <popey> well, there's not been a huge amount of change in dekko to be fair
13:15 <jkt> people are indeed free to invest their time whereever they want, it's just that my experience has shown me that the longer something is developed in isolation, the harder it is to merge stuff back
13:15 <popey> Indeed.
13:16 <jkt> so I'm perfectly aware that my insistance on e.g. doing non-UI specific stuff in C++ may hinder the progress of the Ubuntu version, but OTOH it would be me who would be maintaining the code long-term
13:16 <jkt> hence me rejecting these bits in JS, etc
13:16 <popey> Right, it's your project, you set the tone and rules of engagement.
13:17 <popey> (that term probably sounds more compative than it needed to)
13:17 <jkt> :)
13:17 <popey> *combative
13:18 <jkt> well, as long as it really is just short-term prototyping and people don't complain when I ask them to change stuff, I'm fine with it
13:18 <jkt> OTOH, I would appreciate if I was told that at the beginning and not after one month of silence
13:20 <popey> I thought you were aware of it tbh.
13:20 <popey> So sorry about that.
13:20 <jkt> mistakes happen
13:20 <jkt> so I guess I will just wait for more patches
13:21 <popey> I'll have a chat with Dan and the guys a bit later when he's back online and see if we can work a way forward.
13:22 <popey> I'd hate to lose that early momentum we had.
13:23 <jkt> yup, it was great to see that enthusiasm
13:23 <popey> ok, leave it with me. I'll have a chat with dpm, mhall119, DanChapman|afk & boren and get back to you.
13:24 <jkt> cool
13:24 <popey> thanks guys.
13:25 <popey> anything else you guys want to bring up?
13:26 <popey> ok, lets wrap
13:26 <popey> have a great weekend
