I'm project lead behind Avaneya, a cerebral science fiction game for Ubuntu. I'm based just out of Vancouver. 23:10 I'm from Elmira, but I've travelled to the Greater Metropolis of Guelph for the occasion 23:10 Hi KombuchaKip! Good to see you again 23:10 I am Jim Kelsh (Freshmeadow) a professional accountant (CGA) and a Linux user since 2006. 23:11 For those interested in reading along, there's an agenda at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/CanadianTeam/Meetings/Next 23:11 Hi Freshmeadiow! 23:11 Hi Bob. 23:12 * KombuchaKip waves 23:14 Hi 23:16 ubuntulog: 23:17 meetingology: 23:17 Testing the connection 23:19 Freshmeadiow: Hi! 23:19 It's just Bob now who is away 23:20 He should be here... 23:20 He's sitting next to me 23:20 Alright, who's ready for some Ubuntu! 23:21 Seems the network has split. 23:22 I can't see my original instance on my IRC client, but I seem to be OK on the Webchat 23:23 So, I was passing greetings to Freshmeadiow , jamesmcveity, KombuchaKip , azend or azend|away 23:23 There's an agenda at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/CanadianTeam/Meetings/Next 23:24 It's kinda sparse, so I'm open to suggestions for topics 23:25 You're right, it is somewhat sparse 23:25 The big thing is a recap of Ubuntu Hours 23:25 #topic Ubuntu Hours 23:25 #chair BobJonkman2 23:27 #topic UbuntuHours 23:29 So the big news is that we're at a new Ubuntu Hour in Guelph! 23:29 I understand Ubuntu Hours are supposed to happen every one or two weeks? 23:30 As a Guelphite, YAY!!!! 23:30 From the feedback I've had, there's a demand for more Linuxy activities in Guelph 23:30 We've been running them monthly in Kitchener and Waterloo, 23:31 but other places have them weekly 23:36 The nice thing about Ubuntu Hours is that there's no rules 23:36 (aside from the Code of Conduct, of course) 23:36 How's the community response been to those events? 23:36 So you can have them as often or infrequently as you want 23:37 Hands up who enjoys the Unity desktop. My hand is up, and I use it in my business. 23:37 The Ubuntu Hour Kitchener is really well attended, but Ubuntu Hour Waterloo has been kinda sparse. 23:37 Which is why we're in Guelph today (this would normally be the Ubuntu Hour Waterloo day) 23:37 Freshmeadow: Not a fan of Unity.. 23:38 Why is that, Bob? 23:38 $$ Thread marker for Unity 23:38 $$ On my laptop I've replace Unity with Mate 23:39 hi .. finally got connected :-) 23:39 $$ I've also used LXDE, which isn't bad 23:39 %% Thread marker for Ubuntu Hours 23:39 %% I've also run one-off Ubuntu Hours. 23:39 %% Mostly in Toronto, where I don't get to very often 23:40 !! I would like to have some events in Guelph 23:40 azend|away: I am only a bot, please don't think I'm intelligent :) 23:40 %% I'm hoping genii-around will run one (hint hint) 23:40 !! I would be happy to run an Ubuntu Hour every once and a while here 23:40 azend|away: I am only a bot, please don't think I'm intelligent :) 23:40 $$ I like in Unity how it focuses the app you are in as full screen. For me it minimizes distractions, especially if I am in a spreadsheet. 23:40 ^^ Thread marker for Thread Markers 23:40 !! Perhaps bi-weekly as the Ubuntu Hour community promote 23:40 azend|away: I am only a bot, please don't think I'm intelligent :) 23:41 ^^ Gotta be careful not to use bot prefixes like ! or # 23:42 %% It's getting crowded in here. 23:42 BobJonkman2: unless you like annoying bots 23:43 %% Got 7 people here IRL! 23:43 I like Unity. I was sure if I did at first. I played around with most of the other options even win managers. Now I like Unity best of all even over Windows or MacOS 23:44 Hi Katherine_ ! 23:44 Hi BobJonkman! 23:45 We've been talking about Ubuntu Hours and desktop environments like Unity and LXDE 23:45 The network has been pretty bad, keeps kicking us off 23:46 $$ The network kicks us off beccause you don;t like Unity :) 23:46 Ha 23:47 Am I still online? 23:48 Had to move to another table because of the crowds gathering for Ubuntu Hour Guelph :) 23:49 A good problem to have 23:49 $$ I find with practice Unity becomes very intuitive and very fast. I am running 12.04 32 bit and 64 bit on 2 machines. 23:49 Have we thought of marketing strategies for letting people know about the Ubuntu Hours?? 23:50 Freshmeadow - Are you a Unity dev? 23:51 I wish, I am an accountant who also loves Linux. I guess I shouldn't mention that I like Gnome 3 too... 23:52 Not a fan of that de. 23:53 I do find it fast. 23:53 azend|away was just telling us about the Raspberry Pi. John Kerr (here IRL) is a big fan of the Pi; gave a KWLUG presentation 23:54 I mostly like Gnome3, but it doesn't handle two screens all that well 23:55 KDE was always my main de. Kubuntu was a solid spin. I fell in love with Unity and dumped K 23:55 $$ I find that traditional desktops like in Windows 7, can offer too many distractions in the taskbar when you are deep into a complex spreadsheet. Unity and Gnome say "You are working on this spreadsheet. That is it!!" 23:57 * BobJonkman2 is switching to his other self 23:57 Back 23:58 Freshmeadow: That's exactly what I dislike about Unity - all the indicators I like to see are missing 00:01 So, we're at 8:00pm. 00:02 I'm going to end the meeting, unless there's more business to be transacted 00:03 Okay Bob. Good luck Guelph! 00:03 Thanx jamesmcveity! 00:04 thanks jamesmcveity 00:04 Have a nice Ubuntu Hour! 00:04 Allrighty then! 00:04 Thanx Katherine! 00:04 We'll stay online for a bit yet. 00:05 Maybe next time I'll have less trouble and get on closer to 7. 00:05 $$ I think Unity has a different philosophy. It is trying to minimize the distractions. Use what works for you, That is the beauty of Linux and open source. 00:05 I'm going to pressure azend azend__ azend|away to work on the Ubuntu-ca-Guelph wiki page 00:05 And maybe set up a mailing list 00:05 Any last words? 00:06 OK. 00:06 #endmeeting 00:06 Not from me 00:07 Hmm.. Looks like the meeting bot fell asleep 00:07 however we may come up with some stuff in our Ubuntu Hour following htis meeting 00:07 #endmeeting 00:10 Anyone running Kubuntu?? 00:10 #endmeeting Generated by MeetBot 0.1.5 (http://wiki.ubuntu.com/meetingology)
