admingroup <reply> Up through Ubuntu 11.10, administrator privileges using sudo was granted to the "admin" Unix group. In Ubuntu 12.04, privileges are granted to the "sudo" group, for consistency with upstream and Debian. For compatibility, the "admin" group will continue to have access in 12.04. tonyyarusso

please consider a method of doing things (such as installing software) that <deleted>directly supported by Ubuntu first, and only resort to alternative route (such as !PPA packages, or installing software from source) if you're reasonably sure it's the only way to achieve the wanted goal. When you're helping others, suggest the standard route first, and provide the appropriate disclaimers about non-standard ones. LjL

nounity <reply> Ubuntu 11.10 and higher use GNOME 3 with the !unity shell by default. To use GNOME Shell instead, from 12.10 and up install the "ubuntu-gnome-desktop" package. From 11.04 to 12.04, install the "gnome-shell" package and investigate "gnome-tweak-tool". For GNOME Fallback mode, which is similar to GNOME 2, install "gnome-panel". Both packages will place entries in the Sessions dropdown. Using Natty? See !classic jrib
